My Journey with Language, Words, and Numbers
As I’ve crossed that magical milestone of 50, I’ve become more intentional about keeping my mind sharp. They say that mental acuity isn’t something you can take for granted — you’ve got to nurture it, challenge it, and sometimes even wrestle with it a bit.
For me, one of the ways I stay on my toes is by learning a new language. Duolingo has become a daily ritual, and while I started strong with my streak, I’ll admit there were a few days I slipped. River, on the other hand, has no choice but to keep up — and to be honest, he’s ahead of me now! It’s become this fun little rivalry between us, and I love how it keeps both of us engaged.
For a while, we were also deep into playing Words with Friends. Now, I need to mention that I’m pretty competitive by nature, and River is a champ at that game. It was another fun and sneaky way to stretch our brains, test our vocabulary, and indulge that little competitive spark we both have.
Lately, we’ve been talking about circling back to another old love: math. Both of us enjoyed math in school, and the idea of brushing up on it feels surprisingly exciting. Even better, we’re considering using that as a way to give back — maybe by tutoring kids who need help in math, especially in situations where their parents can’t assist, or resources aren’t available. It feels like a meaningful way to combine something we enjoy with something that matters.
Of course, I’m always open to more ideas. What else could we dive into? What other activities challenge the mind, bring a little joy, and maybe offer a way to give back? If you’ve got suggestions, I’m all ears.
After all — staying sharp is a lifelong adventure.
